Project Description: North County Regional Library is seeking volunteers to assist with shelving and organizing the collection during busy hours on Fridays and Saturdays.

Responsibilities: Organize and shelve returned materials in the children’s and adult areas and help maintain the collection by following organizational protocols.

This role takes place in a busy work space prone to noise and involves constant movement.

Qualifications: Be at least 18 years old, ability to get along well with others, and to communicate pleasantly and effectively with patrons and library staff. Knowledge: Basic understanding of the Dewey Decimal System with excellent alpha-numeric skills, the ability to understand and follow directions. Accuracy, patience and tolerance for meticulous work. Expectations: Ability to lift, push, and pull books from one shelf to another. Ability to stoop and stand for short periods of time. Ability to exert 20 pounds of force occasionally and 10 pounds of force frequently. You work at a pace that fits your ability. Reasonable accommodations will be made.

Must exhibit patience, tolerance, and care; previous experience working around children is desired; Clear, tactful communication and courtesy to staff as well as children and adult patrons; punctuality; reliability; appropriate dress.

Training: Training is provided.

As a Volunteer you will: Acquire new skills and gain recognized work experience; further the Library's mission to promote literacy and build community.

As a Paws to Read Volunteer, you and your therapy dog will act as engaged listeners for children ages 5-11 as they read aloud in a non-judgmental setting. The goal is to boost the children’s reading skills and confidence.   

Responsibilities:  You will position your dog to appear that he is also engaged in the story. You are not to correct the child’s reading unless they ask for assistance. Avoid outside distractions during the reading time. This includes cell phone, or other devices, use that may cause a distraction to the reader or the dog.

Qualifications: Volunteer must be minimum age of 18. Dogs must be a licensed therapy dog, and a copy of the therapy license with the dog's picture must be presented to the library staff. Insurance and a copy of a current shots record from a vet is also required. The dog must have a gentle disposition and like children.  Volunteer must be patient and supportive of the reader and must not correct reading errors. The goal is to build confidence with the reader.  Good communication skills that require courtesy and tact. Previous experience with children is a plus. Must follow directions and understand the objectives of Paws to Read and encourage the reader in a warm and patient manner. Punctuality and reliability are a must.

Days/Hours:  Shifts will last for approximately an hour on a schedule to be determined by branch and volunteer.

Project Description: Make a difference, become a Homework Help Volunteer! Are you passionate about education and enjoy working with kids? North County Regional Library is looking for dedicated Homework Help Volunteers to support K–5 students as they build academic skills and confidence.

As a Homework Help Volunteer, you’ll: 
- Help reinforce essential reading and math skills 
- Connect students with Library resources that can support their learning

Families can register for a 30-minute session with a Library volunteer to get support in completing a homework assignment, practice math or reading skills, or learn how to access Library resources. We are seeking volunteers who can commit to a two-hour block at a Library location one time a week for the school year (or at least one semester). 

Hours: Two hours per week, Tuesdays 4-6pm at North County Regional Library September 15th- December 15th.

 Responsibilities: Volunteers commit to provide Homework Help for a 2-hour window in the afternoon, one day a week. Families are encouraged to register for the program but walk-up appointments may be taken when space is available. There may be time slots when students do not visit. K-5th grade students will fill out a short form to seek assistance with one of these three options: 1. Assignment Completion 2. Practice Skills OR 3. Connect students to Tutor.com. Volunteers will be trained on these three tasks, and understand that the goal is to focus on providing helpful encouragement and guidance, NOT tutoring. 

 Qualifications:

Minimum age of 18.

Patient, tolerant, friendly, and caring manner.

Previous experience with children a plus, or previous education experience preferred. 

Strong communication and basic academic skills.

Must be able to communicate clearly in a tactful, courteous and pleasant manner with library staff, children, and parents.

Punctuality and reliability are a must, with ability to commit to a regular weekly schedule.

Should be able to define and explain instructions to children.

Work quietly and independently.

Neat appearance.

 Training: On-the-job training provided.  All volunteers are required to participate in a Homework Help Training session prior to your first appointment (self-paced virtual training).
