Description

Overview: Charlotte Mecklenburg Library is looking for responsible teens who enjoy working with the public, helping others, and giving back to their community. If selected, VolunTeens will assist staff with the day-to-day duties of a library branch. Applicants will be interviewed and selected according to branch needs. Due to capacity and the volume of applications, not all teens who apply will be accepted into the program.

Ages: 13-17 (18, as long as they are still enrolled in high school)

Responsibilities: VolunTeens have a variety of responsibilities based on branch needs. At this location, we are looking for teens to assist with shelving, shelf-reading (checking that books are in the correct order), creating displays and social media posts, special projects, and helping with library events. We also have an opportunity for four VolunTeens to assist with Chess Club.

Training: Training will be provided during orientation and as needed during the VolunTeen session based on assigned tasks and responsibilities.

Hours: VolunTeens are expected to earn at least 20 hours in the Summer session, which is equivalent to a 2-hour shift once a week. VolunTeens will follow the agreed upon schedule which will occur on days when the branch is open to the public. VolunTeens are committing to the full session. While vacations and other time off are allowed with advance notice, it is not permissible to earn all of the hours in a shorter period of time.

Days and Times Needed: Monday evenings, Tuesday afternoons, Wednesday mornings, and Thursday afternoons. Chess Club VolunTeens will volunteer on Saturdays. There are no other Saturday VolunTeen opportunities outside of Chess Club.

As a VolunTeen you will: Acquire new skills and gain recognized work experience. Expand your social horizons. Contribute to the success of your public library. Have the opportunity to learn about how libraries work and build your communication, organization, and other career-development skills.

Please note: Responding to an opportunity does not guarantee acceptance into the VolunTeen program. Your application is evaluated by staff to select qualified teens to participate in an interview. If selected to move on to this step in the process, staff will contact you to schedule an interview. After interviews are complete, staff will select qualified teens to accept into the VolunTeen program for the session. All applicants will be contacted with an update on their application status. This process enhances job readiness skills and ensures equal opportunities for all applicants in the program.

For further inquiries: Please consult our FAQ. If you have not heard from a staff member within a week of your application, you can follow up with the branch where you applied.
