North County Regional Library: Paws to Read

Description

As a Paws to Read Volunteer, you and your therapy dog will act as engaged listeners for children ages 5-11 as they read aloud in a non-judgmental setting. The goal is to boost the children’s reading skills and confidence.   

Responsibilities:  You will position your dog to appear that he is also engaged in the story. You are not to correct the child’s reading unless they ask for assistance. Avoid outside distractions during the reading time. This includes cell phone, or other devices, use that may cause a distraction to the reader or the dog.

Qualifications: Volunteer must be minimum age of 18. Dogs must be a licensed therapy dog, and a copy of the therapy license with the dog's picture must be presented to the library staff. Insurance and a copy of a current shots record from a vet is also required. The dog must have a gentle disposition and like children.  Volunteer must be patient and supportive of the reader and must not correct reading errors. The goal is to build confidence with the reader.  Good communication skills that require courtesy and tact. Previous experience with children is a plus. Must follow directions and understand the objectives of Paws to Read and encourage the reader in a warm and patient manner. Punctuality and reliability are a must.   

Training: On-the-Job Training

Days/Hours:  Shifts will last for approximately an hour on a schedule to be determined by branch and volunteer.
